Chocolate Hummus

I spend lots of time on the Internet. I would love to say that I spend lots of time doing “important” things on the Internet like reading the news or learning about how to cure an epidemic. But I can’t. I look at food blogs. Lots of food blogs. Some people knit, some people listen to music. I surf the web for food blogs. When I first came upon the recipe for Chocolate Chickpea Cake, I knew that I wanted to make it immediately. It had some of my favorite ingredients and was awfully unusual. Over the past few months, I’ve seen several recipes for sweet chickpea dishes, most notably Chocolate Hummus or Chickpea Frosting.

I know, chocolate and chickpeas might sound a little strange, but the chickpea is a pretty bland bean (technically it’s not a bean, it’s actually a legume…), so I feel like you can totally get away with it.This is an awesome dip for all those football game parties you might be throwing/attending (Go UA!!!!), and it also works as a great snack. It’s sweet and very creamy, just like the texture of savory hummus. You can try it with salty pita chips (the sweet-salty combo is awesome) or something sweeter like graham crackers, cinnamon sugar pita chips, or fruit.

 

Nutella… Makes everything “betta”…

 

Chocolate Hummus

Ingredients

  • 1 can chickpeas (Garbanzo beans), rinsed and drained
  • 3 Tablespoons Nutella (or peanut butter)
  • 1 Tablespoon honey
  • 1-1.5 Tablespoon water
  • Chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, peanuts, coconut flakes, dried fruit (optional)
Method
  1. Place chickpeas in a food processor/blender. Pulse until the chickpeas start to look like a thick, chunky paste.
  2. Add Nutella and honey and blend the hummus until desired consistency is reached. This takes patience, mine took about 5 minutes of blending.
  3. If it looks too chunky, add a little water and continue to pulse until smooth.
  4. After blending, if you want to make it “fancy” toss in some of the optional toppings (the chocolate chips were an awesome addition) and mix with a spoon.
  5. Serve with pita chips, pretzels, fruit, on bread, on canine… Maybe not. Refrigerate if there is anything left for up to 1 week.
